The second international workshop within the joint Norway-Azerbaijan CRIPTIC project

The second workshop within the Akvaplan-niva led CRIPTIC project (Cleaning Riverine Plastic from a Transboundary Inflow to the Caspian) was held as a webinar on the 27th of June 2022. The workshop was led by the project manager from Norway Dr Peygham Ghaffari.

During the workshop, the partners presented and discussed interim project results achieved in 2021 and 2022, as well as plans for summer-autumn 2022. More than 100 participants, from Azerbaijan, Norway, Iran, Italy, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, and Turkey, joint the event that included presentations (lectures) and follow up discussions. Nils Erik Jørgensen from TerraNor gave two lectures on OBIA, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence focusing on eCongnition, and machine classification for debris detection within CRIPTIC. Alexei Bambulyak from Akvaplan-niva gave a talk about citizen science, public awareness, and participation components of the project. Bert van Bavel from NIVA presented a follow up of the 2021 inventory and protocols modification for the Caspian Sea with aims and tasks for the 2022 field studies.

Among the CRIPTIC coming key events this year are the second fieldwork and clean-up operations at the Kura River and the Caspian Sea coast sites in July; presentation of CRIPTIC at international forums, including the 7th International Marine Debris Conference in South Korea in September.
